What the BMW i4 Gets Right?
Model 3 may have more sophisticated features than the i4; however, BMW’s infotainment and technology features are much simpler to operate. The i4 has a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch Digital Instrument Cluster.
Both are linked to form one big curved display in the instrument cluster on your dashboard. BMW iDrive 8 infotainment system is available and can be operated via the screen or by a rotary controller in the console in the middle. Unlike Tesla’s infotainment systems, BMWs come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Each Model 3 and i4 compete in the premium segment, but BMW’s cabin is much better than Tesla’s. The i4 has luxurious materials, a great design and fit, and a luxurious design that makes the EV feel like a high-end car.

1. Platforms & Variants
There’s the Tesla Model 3 in three variants: the model was known as “the Standard Range+, so it’s your basic model. There’s also The Long Range and the Performance. With the BMW, you have only two choices. There’s a beginning-level eDrive40 and the more powerful M50.
However, let’s get back to the basics since these two cars were created differently! Let’s discuss Platforms. Tesla is an EV manufacturer by nature. However, BMW has been making combustion engines for years.
Therefore, Tesla didn’t have any concessions to make there…they went about making the best EV they could.
However, BMW faced a decision to make, whether to create a ground-up electric vehicle or build an EV that is not fully functional so it could be fitted with an electric motor or combustion engine inside. They chose the second option.
Now…that’s not to say it’s impossible to make a quality electric vehicle if it’s not made from the ground. The models like the Hyundai Kona and Kia e-Niro prove otherwise. You can perform more with your car when built on a specific platform.
2. Design & Styling
Let’s discuss styling before we get to the important stuff, such as the engine’s power and range.
One thing to remember is that even at the design stage, there is a cultural difference between the two companies. There’s a difference in how they approach styling…and this impacts things like fabric selection and the cabin’s layout.
Even though you might like one style over another, that doesn’t suggest that one is superior. They’re different and will accommodate different preferences.
On the exterior, the i4 will be a familiar sight to BMW lovers, and it’s virtually identical to the combustion series counterparts…to the non-trained eye! The M50 is given some changes to the design to make it a distinctly German brand, a fast coupe with a more aggressive style.
However, the Tesla seems to be created in a wind tunnel. It’s simpler and more elegant. The front ends start lower before rising gradually. If you’re not looking for the wheels and a tiny spoiler on the back, it’s not easy to determine what Model 3 you’re looking at.
On the inside, you’ll find inside, its BMW design exactly as enthusiasts would prefer. The long curved display across the dashboard is attractive and stands out from models like the Model 3, which has a larger, more prominent, rectangular screen.
The absence number of controls on Model 3’s screen Model 3 gives it a contemporary and minimalist appearance. The BMW is more classic and doesn’t disturb the familiarity that has become a norm for many. The materials are better and have more soft leathers.

Additionally, you get more room in the center console. The extra space is present with the Model 3 with its frunk and spacious trunk/boot.
Some criticize Model 3 for its size. Model 3 for the size of the opening. However, it’s still an excellent space for a vehicle of the same size.
4. Battery & Range & Charging
Let’s look at the batteries and range, range and charging…and we’ll begin with batteries. What’s the story behind the two vehicles?

Let’s set the eDrive40 to its counterpart, the Long Range Model 3. The BMW can use a battery of 80.7kWh compared to the Model 3 that you can currently get with a 75kWh usable. It’s an advantage on the part of the BMW in size…but does it give you more range?
The WLTP numbers slightly favor Tesla. We believe there is a minimal difference in the real world, but if you had to, we’d prefer Tesla to be the winner. We think both vehicles are capable of 300 miles out in real life. A bit less in winter, and a small amount in summer in the city.
What when you need a bit of speed and choose whether to go with the M50 or the Performance? Both models are equipped with identical batteries. The official ratings and estimates suggest that Tesla has a tiny margin.
Tesla may be the more efficient vehicle since it can get more from its battery pack. It’s not a huge surprise since the BMW weighs 200kg heavier than the Tesla.
So what happens if you need to recharge them again? You can say with confidence that both are pretty good choices!
Let’s begin with AC charging. All of these vehicles will consume 11 kW. On DC, it’s pretty decent too. Even the entry-level Model 3 will hit speeds of 175kW or so on DC. For the BMW models, both versions will top out at 200kW.
The Long Range and Performance variants of the Model 3 will peak at the 210kW mark. It’s an even draw again. We’ll award the win to Tesla since you’ll gain a bit more range with the energy you’ve put back into the battery. Also, you have unlimited connectivity to Supercharger.
Now it’s time to get to the best stuff…Performance! So let’s get the entry-level Model 3 out of the way and state that it’s got an acceptable 239kW of power capable of completing the 0-62mph run within 6.1 seconds.
Let’s compare the eDrive 40 against that of the Model 3 Long Range. With the BMW having an additional 200kg around, the car will require some power to compete with the Tesla.
With 250 kW, it’s estimated that the BMW can get you to 60mph in 5.7 seconds. This is more efficient than the Model 3’s entry-level Model 3 but gets well out of the way with the Long Range, which takes just 4.4 seconds to reach 62mph.
Let’s look at how the i4 M50 stacks to that of the Model 3 Performance. Both models are equipped with all-wheel drive, meaning you’ll have no issue gaining a grip on the road. 400kW and 795Nm of torque power the BMW. When it comes to power, the Tesla is just ahead of it with 413 kW. It is unable to match the torque of an estimated 660Nm!
What exactly does it mean when you set your foot down on the pedal? The M50 can reach 62mph in 3.9 seconds, unlike the Model 3’s brisk 3.3 seconds. However, it’s worth noting it’s true that German producers have a pretty image of under-promising or over-delivering on time.
Therefore, we believe that the speeds of 0-62mph and 1/4 mile of these two vehicles are almost identical. The Tesla will probably get off the line a bit faster, but the more power could see the BMW be a little more powerful when it comes to speed on the Autobahn.
So what separates the two cars? And why would you buy one over the other?
Purely speaking, In terms of pure numbers, the Tesla can beat it…a little quicker, just a little more range and efficiency and charging capabilities, as well as larger internal space.
However, as we’ve all heard that it’s more than an exercise in numbers when you purchase the car of your dreams.
It’s about what catches your heart. For some, the feeling of the cabin inside the BMW will be the winner every day. This and the feeling of security comes from being in the best German brand. Others, the technological superiority of Tesla and the Supercharger network, make it an easy decision.
