How to fix paint chips on car

We all wish to keep our cars as good as new. But, with time, we inevitably wind up in minor accidents that leave a small area of cracked paint on our vehicle, which is also referred to as a dent.

When it comes to fixing chipped paint, various car care companies may charge a large sum of money.

However, you can quickly get rid of that dent without spending a lot of money if you use some ways that are not only simple but also economical.

Best method to fix chipped paint on a car

In order to begin discussing the many ways of repairing chips, it is necessary to first discuss the two fundamental procedures that must be followed for every kind of paint defect.

Step 1- Determining the condition of the chip

Chips on the paint of your vehicle can be categorised into three different kinds:

  • Small- Small chips do not take much space and can be fixed very easily.
  • Medium . Medium chips are bigger and need a few efforts to be fixed.
  • Big-  Big chips include chips on your paint that are larger and are a bit difficult to fix as compared to small and medium chips.

Step 2- Cleaning the area around the chip

It is essential that you properly clean the surface before beginning any painting. Painting over imperfections like dirt may detract from the final look of the product and cause it to slide off, exposing the chip once again.

Using warm soap and water, wash the affected area of the vehicle before rinsing it well and dry it thoroughly afterwards.

Method 1: Touching Up small chips

Step 3- Using a touchup paint pen to fill the area

In contrast to other dents that can frequently be removed by buffing or wet sanding, chipped paint will need the application of fresh paint to the metal.

Eventually, if the metal is exposed to the outside environment for an extended period of time, it will oxidise and rust. It is possible to avoid rust by using touch-up car paint, and with the vast range of choices available, it is advised to select one that fits your vehicle precisely.

How to use the Touchup paint pen?

After the area has completely dried, remove the cover from the paint pen and put the tip of the pen into the centre of the chip. According to the kind of paint pen you’re using, you may need to press it down a bit to get the paint to come out. Use just the necessary amount of paint to slightly overfill the chip.

Step 4- Allowing the paint to dry, wash and wax the car afterwards

Before cleaning the car, make sure the paint is completely dry. By scraping or cleaning it too quickly, you may harm the fresh paint. Depending on the kind and quantity of paint pen used, as well as the surrounding circumstances, drying time may range from an hour to a day.

Things to keep in mind

  • Before putting any paint on the vehicle, be certain that it is fully dry.
  • Avoid applying so much paint on the canvas that it starts drip. The paint colour will be consistent, but little details such as drips will show out.
  • If you inadvertently apply too much paint, remove it as soon as possible by wiping it off with a clean cloth.
  • To check whether the paint is dry, gently press your finger against it. If it still feels sticky after a few minutes, it isn’t completely dry.

Method 2: Painting Medium sized chips

Step 3- Removing oil and grease  using alcohol

Using a cloth, saturate the chipped area with rubbing alcohol, enamel reducer or prepsol until the area is clean and dry. This will eliminate any greasy material that may have accumulated in the region, making it easier for the primer to form a firm connection with the metal.

The presence of oil or grease is most likely to be invisible, but it is essential to get rid of it before starting to paint.

Step 4- Priming the metal

Application process of Primer: Apply the primer to the dry, clean metal using the application brush. Make sure not to let the priming come into touch with the paint surrounding the chip. Use just enough primer to fully cover the unpainted area with a thin yet solid coating. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Where to buy?

Automotive priming can be bought at your local car parts shop, as well as at many major stores such as Walmart and Target. In contrast to the paint pen that will be used for tiny chipping, the primer will arrive in a small container with a brush.

Step 5- Use a dabbing brush to apply the paint

Touch-up paint, applied with an applicator brush rather than a pen, is required for medium and large chips. While the paint itself is the same, the method by which it is applied somewhat differs.

Shake the touch-up paint well before dipping the brush. Simply dip the nose of the applicator brush into it to avoid leakage. Brush paint onto the chip with the applicator brush and move it around slightly to enable it to stick and expand the metal.

The Dabbing Brush aids in the adhesion and expansion of the paint on the metal. Rather than rubbing the paint into the automobile, dip the applicator brush into the paint again and touch it to the paint in the same spot, allowing the paint to flow out and settle on the vehicle.

Step 6- Wax and wash the vehicle

While just a small part of the car has been painted and waxed, it is essential to wax and wash the whole vehicle in order to guarantee that the shininess of the paint is consistent throughout.

Things to keep in mind

  • It may take several dabs to completely cover the chip, but doing it the proper way as told above will enable the paint to settle evenly.
  • It is important to remain patient during this procedure in order to produce the finest possible final result.
  • You can reapply the paint if you think it is necessary. But make sure not to overuse it.

Method 3: Fixing Large paint Chips

Step 3- Remove chips or debris

Larger chips are more prone to collecting debris, which must be cleaned before going on to the next step. Remove any big grains you see with your fingers or plucking tool, then blow on the area or use bottled air to clear out any accumulated silt.

Large pieces have the ability to flake the paint surrounding them. Remove any peeling paint because it is no longer attached to the metal and will ultimately fall off on its own, taking your new touch-up paint with it. You can remove flaky skin with your fingers, a toothpick or tweezers.

Step 4- Get rid of the rust

Rust should be removed from metal surfaces by swiping a Q-tip with CLR over the chipped area. If the rust has penetrated far enough to produce a hole in the door or if the metal has been pierced, it is likely that the rust has caused damage to a body component. It is not possible to repair such damage by merely painting over it.

Step 5- Sand the chip edges

A fine-grit sandpaper should be used to smooth the paint borders around the chip in order to reduce the visibility of the affected area. However, even if the restoration of a large chip is apparent, softening the edges of the old paint can aid in the paint’s ability to mix more effectively with the new paint.

Step 6- Apply primer

After the chip has been sanded, cleaned, and dried, apply the primer on the chip.

Step 7- Wet sand the primed area

After drying, the primer may seem grainy as a result of the bristles on the brush or the way the primer settles on the metal surface. Activate the hose and put it immediately over the chip so that the water runs straight over the dry primer. Wet sand the primer with 2000 grit sandpaper once it has been activated. To fully flatten the primer, sand it down until it is absolutely flat and smooth.

Step8- Applying the paint to the primed area

Apply the touch-up paint on the primed area using a brush. Dip the applicator brush in the paint and try to put the paint in the centre of the chip. Depending on the kind of car paint you choose, you may need to apply more than one coat for painting the chipped area.

Step9- Wet sand the painted area after it’s dry

Once the fresh paint has completely dried, it is necessary to repeat the wet sanding process on it in order to remove any texture and make the paint completely flat.

Step10- Apply clear coat

A clear coat should be applied to the newly painted surface. This will not only preserve the paint, but it will also give it a brilliant glow, which will allow it to blend in even more perfectly with the surrounding paint.

Step 11- Wash and wax the entire car

After the affected area has been completely dried, thoroughly wash and wax the whole car to ensure that the wax is evenly distributed all across the vehicle. Waxes will aid in the integration of freshly painted areas with the adjacent paint, allowing the restoration even harder to spot.

Summary

Your car paint offers your car with a lot more than a good appearance. It also acts as  a vital component in protection of the car’s body against rust and other environmental factors. And, like any other component, it also works as a shield to protect your car against damage from a number of causes, including vehicle washes, insect splatter etc.

As a result, it is critical for car owners to repair their chipped paint as soon as possible in order to prevent further damage to their vehicle.
