2023 Toyota Sequoia review
The verdict: Large and bold but highly comfortable, the car-as-a-tank 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a solid SUV loved by families, with some oddities.
Comparatively to the competition, it’s just as big as its rivals from Gué and GM; however, the Sequoia’s hybrid engine compromises two primary reasons to own a large SUV, leaving a vehicle that lacks third row passengers and cargo space.
In 2023, the Toyota Sequoia will be new from the bottom up, a more significant, modern, and stylish large-sized vehicle than the model it replaces. It shares its greased parts with the Toyota Tundra pickup, the Lexus LX full-size luxury SUV and the latest Toyota Land Cruiser, which has been discontinued in the U.S.
It means that the Sequoia gets all of the Tundra’s and the LX’s substantial improvements, such as the new engines that are more efficient and have a much more elegant interior. It’s a certain win, but what will Toyota’s new SUV fare in reality?

1. Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Sequoia is standard and comes with an iForce MAX hybrid powertrain available on the Tundra pickup and Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. The powertrain consists of a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor that generates 437 horsepower and 583 lb-feet of torque.
The Tundra’s automatic 10-speed transmission is also available on the Sequoia SUV. The rear-wheel drive option is available with four-wheel drive available in all versions and on the off-road-focused TRD Pro model.
Its TRD Pro also comes with off-road-specific equipment, such as upgraded Fox dampers, the front skid plate and the rear differential is locked, with forged, 18-inch tires that come with 33-inch tires.
On our first test ride, we were pleased by the Sequoia’s snooze-free driving position and quiet cabin; however, we were less than thrilled with its driving style on the road.
Its wide-spread feel on the road can make it challenging to find the lane, something we’ve experienced in similar SUVs. Additionally, its lightweight steering effort can make it feel twitchy while traveling.
We would like to test this Sequoia on the road on the track we test it on and update this article with the results of our tests.
2. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Sequoia’s new hybrid configuration makes it much more efficient than the previous model. The rear-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated to 21 mpg city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. Choosing four-wheel drive lowers the figures to 19 mpg city and highway, 22 mpg, and 20 combined mpg.

3. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The spacious interior of the Sequoia is maintained with this latest model, with three row suv included as standard. A second-row bench configuration that can accommodate eight passengers is standard, and the option of captain’s chairs for the second row reduces the seating capacity to seven.
The headroom is limited in both rear rows, particularly when fitted with an optional panoramic sunroof. With a broad range of trims to choose from for interior trims, they include everything from cloth trim to leather upholstery and various levels of chrome and wood trims as you climb the price ladder.
Higher trim levels include features like heated and cooled seats in the second row, a panoramic sunroof, and a premium stereo system. The cargo space of the Sequoia is less ample than competitors and adjustable cargo shelf system
If the seat in the rear is folded down, there are only 12 cubic feet of cargo space, and folding the third row back does not result in a fold flat floor for loading.
4. Exterior Styling
The Tundra connection is more comprehensive than a standard foundation. They’re alike from a style perspective also. It’s not a complaint. Both models are a refreshing style and give this 2023 Sequoia an imposing and likable character. Naturally, its size can also be a reason for its dominant presence.
The wheel sizes range between 18 inches and 22 inches. The wheels of Capstone have a chrome-colored finish. There’s the standard assortment of black, white, silver, and magnetic gray metallic. The most desirable colors are Supersonic Red and only available to TRD Pro model Solar Octane, a deep orange.
5. Infotainment and Connectivity
The old Sequoia’s outdated touchscreen layout is now replaced with the vast 14.0-inch touchscreen found on the Tundra. It have uses Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The screen is standard on every model, except that of the standard SR5 and will be running Toyota’s most recent infotainment software, which provides a wide range of smartphone mirroring and other connectivity options, such as Wi-Fi hotspots as well as various streaming options for music.
6. Toyota safety sense and Driver-Assistance Features
All of the Sequoia’s driver-assistance features are standard across all models. Limited warranty for three years, or 36,000 miles.
The Powertrain warranty lasts for five years or the equivalent of 60,000 miles.
Maintenance is free for up to two years, the equivalent of 25,000 miles
Its 2023 Toyota Sequoia starts at $58,300 with a destination fee of $1,495. A mid-range 4×4 Limited starts at $67,700. At the same time, the lavish Capstone 4×4 model is priced at $78,300.
If you look at other models in this category, The Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe and Nissan Armada all start at approximately $50K. It’s the GMC Yukon is about $52K.
9. Factory Options
A few options are available in the SR5 variant of the 2023 Sequoia. The SR5 Premium package includes a giant touchscreen, power-folding third-row seats and a hands-free tailgate that can be operated by faux leather upholstery, 120-volt outlets inside the cabin and another located in the rear cargo space.
Its TRD Sport package swaps the suspension for a more rigid one, and the wheels are an alloy with a black finish. With its unique suspension system, the TRD Off-Road option (for models with four-wheel drive) will undoubtedly take a muddier direction. This particular package is available with the new Limited trim.
Limited features include heated/ventilated front seats equipped with memory settings, a power tailgate and a third row that folds power, and shades for the third and second row seats, all standard equipment.
Platinum elevates luxury by offering heated and ventilated second row passengers and a panoramic sunroof. It also has wireless charging, head-up displays, LED exterior lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and the fourteen-speaker JBL audio equipment.
This TRD Pro version has enhanced suspension and underbody protection for more excellent off-road capability. Additionally, it comes with the TRD Pro roof rack, heated steering wheel and 4-wheel drive as the standard.
Capstone is an excellent choice for a full wood and leather look. Additional features for the 2023 Sequoia include an air suspension with load-leveling and an adjustable suspension.
