The world is seeing a lot of development in the field of technology and this has led to many drastic changes in the past few years. The most major paradigm shift has been from fuel and gas driven cars to electric vehicles. The idea of electric vehicles in the commercial market became feasible with the entry of Tesla into the market. The company Tesla has been around for only a few years now, but it has already garnered a lot of attention and has carved out a niche for itself when it came to electric vehicles.

The cars from the stable of Tesla have received acclaim and support from all over the world not only for its electrical innovation, but also because it has drastically reduced the impact on the environment due to vehicular emission. But the most interesting factor in cars from Tesla is their weight. The average Tesla weighs around 1600 to 2500 kilos, depending on the model. As you can see that this weight is much lower than normal cars. This has caused much apprehension in the customers regarding the fact that how can a lightweight car offer the services of a normal passenger or commercial car. But not only does Tesla weigh less, but it is also extremely efficient as compared to other cars.

To make this point more clear, let’s discuss some of the most popular models from Tesla and how much they weigh. This can give you a general idea about how being lightweight does not affect the performance of the cars.

Tesla Model S

The best example of lightweight cars from Tesla is the Model S which comprises a full aluminum body construction that reduces the weight drastically. The chassis is reinforced with high tech steel for providing support to the structure. The overall weight of the car is reduced due to the aluminum body which helps in getting the car a better acceleration rate than the normal cars.

The innovation from the side of Tesla does not stop there. It has used biocomposite materials to design the interior of the cars to make it as less bulky as possible. These materials are very light in weight but extremely stiff to endure any serious damage. This kind of innovative design and materials helped Tesla to drop nearly 500 kilos from its weight.

Another area for weight reduction was the wheels where completely aluminum rims were used. The reduced weight in the wheels did not only increase the acceleration of the car, but also made breaking more effective. Also, the aluminum in the wheels ensured that it works fine in milder temperatures. The aluminum wheels also helped the car drop an additional 500 kilos. The frameless glass support also adds to weight-reducing factors of the car and perhaps the only heavy component used in the Tesla car is the battery which weighs around 544 kilos. The car comes in different variants and they weigh around 2100 to 2300 kilos.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3The previous model we discussed that is the model S from Tesla was more in the category of luxury cars, but this model, Tesla Model 3 is aimed at the general buyers. This car is much lighter than the model S but that does not mean that it has cut back on the efficiency of the Tesla cars.

Similar to the model S this one also uses steel and aluminum for its body construction. The roofs are made of glass. The combination of both metals ensures that the car is lightweight but does not lose the strength in its support. The biggest change in weight reduction was the batteries which are 15% lighter than that used in the Model S. The new battery used an increased concentration of nickel in it which contributed to the reduction in weight but also offers higher output.

Another area contributing to the lightweight is the shorter dimensions when compared to the Model S. This model is aimed at the masses and hence the dimensions have been tweaked to fit in every garage space. The reduced dimensions play an important role in reducing the overall weight of the car and also make sure that it fits comfortably in your garage. The Tesla Model 3 weighs around 1611 kilos.

Tesla Model X

There are some speculations when it comes to this model and that is because the Tesla Model X weighs nearly 10% more than the Model S. Like the other models this one too uses aluminum and steel for lightweight and rigid models. The car does not come with spare tires as it usually adds to the weight of the car. The major addition being the five lithium-ion battery packs. Despite heavier weight than the other Tesla models, this car can produce enough horsepower to tow nearly 2300 kilos which is the most that can be done by an electric car.

Although being heavier this model is still way lighter than cars from other companies weighing at nearly 2500 kilos. The location and weight of the model X ensure that the center of gravity of the car remains low and helps in reducing the risks of rollovers. This car has enough storage space to compete with the most premium SUVs despite being lighter than them.

Conclusion

To conclude this article we can say that Tesla has pulled out all the stops it can when it comes to making electric vehicles more lightweight and efficient than the other cars. Their innovations in the design and the materials used have made this possible. But the main focus of the Tesla company that has helped it succeed in making these lightweight and efficient cars is in the area of weight distribution. Instead of the 50-50 weight distribution that is common in all the cars, Tesla focused on concentrating the major weight of the car to the rear end. This did not only help in reducing the weight of the cars, but also drastically reduced the chances of accidents that can happen. So the Tesla cars do not weigh much, but when it comes to performance they are surely the heavyweights in the market.
