How To Check Brake Fluid? If your car has brakes, it will have brake fluid. This vital substance transfers the force from your foot on the pedal to the brakes themselves. Over time, brake fluid can become contaminated and/or low. Checking your brake fluid regularly is an important part of maintaining your vehicle.

What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid, a hydraulic fluid, helps the brake pedal work smoothly. The fluid flows through the brake system and prevents corrosion. It also lubricates the parts. This ensures that the whole system works as it should.

What color should brake fluid be?

Your brake fluid will be almost transparent when it is new. It will have a yellowish hue. As your brake system uses this fluid, dirt and other debris will build up.

This causes the fluid to become thicker and darker over time. Fluid flushes will remove this old fluid from the system and replace it with fresh juices to maintain your vehicle in top condition.

How To Check Brake Fluid?

Check your brake fluid levels every few months. Please don’t rely on dashboard warning lights to inform you when it is low.

You can drive your car for a brief period, but you should brake several times to fill the brake system.

Parking on a flat surface is best – parking on a slope could result in an inaccurate reading.

Locate the brake fluid reservoir by opening the bonnet. Check your vehicle manual if you are unsure of where it is located.

The outside of the reservoir container should be painted white with fill marks at the ‘low’ or maximum. The reservoir container should contain a fluid that is a dark liquid.

You should add brake fluid to replenish your fluid level if it is below the “low” marker.

If the level is not raised soon after, it could indicate leakage in your brake system. Wearing brake pads can also cause this. Brake calipers that have to move further, thereby drawing more brake fluid into your system, can also cause this. Both cases should be reported to a mechanic immediately.

The fluid could absorb water from the brake system’s weakest point if the level is higher than the maximum marker. Your brake function may suffer if you drive with brake fluid that has water.

Brake fluid has a higher boiling temperature than water. To have your brake fluid replaced, ensure your level is not higher than the maximum.

How do I add brake fluid?

How do I add brake fluid?

It is easy to top up your brake fluid if it is low.

Place your car on a flat surface.

If the brake fluid reservoir cap is dirty, clean it so that no debris gets into the reservoir.

The cap should be removed. You may need to take the lid off if the fluid is too dark or has debris.

Slowly, carefully and steadily add brake fluid to the reservoir until it reaches the maximum fill marker.

Screw the reservoir cap securely back on.

You can drive your vehicle briefly, stopping occasionally, then once you have parked on a flat surface, check the fluid to ensure a successful fill.

Brake fluid can cause paint to corrode, so be careful not to spill it onto your vehicle. You can clean it off with lots of water. Brake fluid is oily, and you will be able to tell when it is scorched.

Sign Of Low Brake Fluid

The regular operation should not cause your vehicle to lose brake fluid with brake wear, the level of liquid drops only slightly. If the level drops, it could be a sign that there is a leak somewhere. To avoid any dangerous decrease in brake performance, consult a professional immediately.

Your vehicle may require a particular type of brake fluid. Usually, but not always, it is DOT3. It will usually be located on the brake fluid reservoir cap for newer vehicles. You can consult the owner’s manual of your car to determine if it is not.
