1. How to check your engine oil level with a dipstick

Prepare for Check

Place your vehicle on level ground. Lift the hood. You can consult your owner’s guide if you are unsure.

Most vehicles have a hood release lever under the instrument panel on the left. You will need to remove the safety catch at the front edge of your hood before raising the hood.

Locate the Dipstick

Most vehicles have a dipstick that is small in color, usually yellow or orange. It’s marked with an oil-can symbol.

Pull the Dipstick

The tube in which the dipstick is kept should be obliterated. It’s similar to removing a sword from its sheath. Use a paper towel or a rag to wipe the oil from the dipstick’s end.

The dipstick’s tip will have two lines. The lower line indicates that the oil level has dropped to one quart. The crankcase, the car’s oil tank, is filled with the upper bar. Some dipsticks can also be marked with “full” or “add.”

Note Oil Level

Slowly insert the dipstick into the tube and push it down. Now, pull it out and examine the tip. It should be covered in oil. Your vehicle can run without oil if the level is in the middle of these lines. It’s time for you to add another quart if the oil is below the mark.

After adding a quarter of a quart of oil to the crankcase, let it drain for a while. Then recheck the level to ensure that it is not too low or high. Your engine does not need to be at its highest oil level to function safely.

2. How to check your engine oil level without a dipstick

Modern cars don’t have dipsticks. Instead, the engine has a sensor or sensors that monitor the oil level and displays it on either the gauge cluster or the infotainment screen.

This data is often hidden from drivers, usually hidden within a submenu. To find out how to display your oil level in your car, consult your owner’s manual.

The engine’s temperature and operating conditions will vary depending on which car you have. For example, my 2005 Porsche Boxster needed to be turned off for at least 30 mins before it could display a reading.

However, my 2008 BMW M5 must be at an average operating temperature before it gives me a reading. It all depends on how the engineers built your car.

How do you add oil?

Use the recommended oil grade as indicated in the owner’s guide. You will see a label such as 0W-20, 5W-30 or both. It can be purchased by the quart at most service stations or auto-parts stores and many discounts and supermarket retailers.

Remove the oil filler cap located on the top of your engine to add oil. Overfilling the machine with oil can be detrimental to its health.

You should only add a small amount at a given time. Add about half a gallon. A funnel is a good idea to avoid spills.

Give the dipstick a rest for a few minutes before checking again. Add the remaining quart if the level is not close to the minimum mark.

You will rarely need more than one quart unless your engine is burning oil or leaking. If you need to add a second quart, make sure to check it as you go.

Securely screw the oil filler cap on, and you are done.
