Why Did Volkswagen Cheat?

Volkswagen, one of the best car companies in the world has allegedly been caught up with cheating allegations following their diesel emission violations. At least more than five hundred thousand car models have been reported for this scandal of diesel emission violations. Most people are curious about ‘why did Volkswagen cheat’.

Other car companies like Toyota and general motors also in the past have experienced some big scandals.

Volkswagen, one of the best car companies in the world, owning more than fifty percent in the diesel market in the United States, has been found guilty of cheating in the diesel emission entry tests. Volkswagen soon fell over after years and years of advertising clean car diesel as a substitute for electric and hybrid cars.

So why did Volkswagen cheat? Here’s how the scandal all started in the first place.

How the Volkswagen Cheating Scandal All Started

For the people curious as to why did Volkswagen cheat, this is how the scandal arose. The Volkswagen company introduced the emission software platform in about five hundred thousand and more diesel cars situated in America and more than ten million cars worldwide of which it provides them with equal parameters in a drive cycle emission implemented by the agency of environmental protection.

According to the California resources and Air board, the “defeat devices” help to detect throttle, steering plus other inputs of which are used in switching between two different operating modes.

In accordance with the test, diesel cars are compliant with the federal level of emissions.

The computer tends to switch to a different separate mode when one is driving at a normal pace.

This has an effect as it changes the injection timing, fuel pressure, recirculation of the exhaust gas and in certain models that have Adblue, it is determined by how much urea fluid which is deposited in the exhaust, is sprayed in.

The separating mode, on the bright side, delivers high power and mileage. It also permits a lot and heavier emissions of nitrogen oxide, an air pollutant that contributes to cancer, especially lung cancer, which is about forty-two times more than the limit imposed.

This does not conclude that each TDI is putting in or pumping forty-two times of nitrogen oxide gas as it is supposed to. Some of the diesel cars can emit a number of times above the federal limit of which depends on the load and the owner’s style of driving.

Did Volkswagen Cheat Because of the Cost of Their Diesel Cars?

When most people ask as to why did Volkswagen cheat, one of the main reasons is because they were not able to boost the purchasing price of their cars not as much as they would have wanted.

The premium cost for the TDI diesel as opposed to the gasoline engine of which are in one model of Volkswagen ranges in price from one thousand dollars to seven thousand five hundred dollars. Volkswagen has a mass-market and has cheaper cars.

The Audi brand is efficient and more weighted and suited to medium or small cars. Luxury buyers have the option to buy higher premiums and pay for them, for the digital technologies they need whereas buyers who prefer volume cars are more price sensitive.

It was not until the year 2015 did the new engine together with the SCR appear in lists of replacements for the golf and A3. The Sedan Passat model development in the United States was fitted together with the SCR from when it was launched.

Some of the Cars Affected by the Cheating Scandal

The Audi, Porsche, and  Volkswagen diesel car models, under investigation, have been guilty of emission violations by the firm EPA. There has been no recall lately and all the cars managed to pass the state inspections.

This is also done in a time bearing in mind that Volkswagen admitted and was found guilty for violating emission laws set up by the federal, and is not a safety issue or a state issue.

In the case that the Volkswagen company issues a late recall, some of the States including California and those that abide by the standards for zero emissions, may prevent the car owners and drivers from renewing new registration in case the fix is incomplete.

Some of the diesel cars cited for emission scandal include the 2009 to 2015 model Volkswagen Jetta, 2010 to 2015 model Volkswagen golf, 2010 to 2015 model Audi A3, 2012 to 2015 model Volkswagen beetle, 2012 to 2015 model Volkswagen Passat, 2009 to 2015 model Audi Q7, 2009 to 2016 model Volkswagen Touareg, 2013 to 2016 model Porsche diesel Cayenne, 2014 to 2016 model Audi A6, 3014 to 2016 model Audi A7, 2014 to 2016 model Audi A8L and A8 and finally the 2014 to 2016 model Audi Q5.

Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi’s dealers are not allowed to sell any other new types of diesel apart from the 2015 models which should be sold while new. They are also not supposed to sell pre-owned certified types of diesel which are mostly used. Volkswagen company has now resorted to electric cars with the possibility of not selling any TDI diesel for cars in America.

Consequences of the Emissions Scandal to the Volkswagen Company

In the year 2018, news arose that the Volkswagen company In suing one of the members who was their former executive who was later sentenced to prison for his major role in the cheating scandal. It is evident that Volkswagen companies regret and most of us wonder why did Volkswagen cheat?

According to Automatic news, the Volkswagen company wants to make back all the money they used in court to protect and defend one of their own, Oliver Schmidt who was the former general director in the environmental sector in the Volkswagen company, which was located in Michigan.

The Volkswagen company used about four million US dollars to defend Schmidt. Oliver Schmidt was later found guilty and sentenced to prison for seven years and a fine of four hundred thousand dollars was charged on him.

Other more than five directors from the company have also been found guilty and charged. The Volkswagen company has since tried it’s best to reach the status it was years ago before the emissions scandal.
